Mindfulness inherent within practice
The inherently mindful practice of yoga is not simply moving the body for a desired effect; it only fulfils this criterion of yoga or ‘union’ if experienced via non-judgemental, compassionate awareness, curiosity and exploration. This requires skilfully applied, consistent effort to notice that any digestive pain or discomfort (or body disconnect) that can accompany IBS and so on, can come with deep-seated disharmony. It is then that we can shift a response of ‘the pain is here again, it’s unpleasant/unwanted/upsetting’ to a curious ‘this is here, how does it feel in this breath?’
This kind attention may then bring more of a sense of acceptance and potential, not to put up with that which is upsetting for us but to let the story and identification with the ‘issue’ simply be. Then we can begin to feel sensation as the actual experience in the present moment: hot, tight, sticky – descriptions without ‘good’ or ‘bad’ categorisation. This gives us the option to find where we can also feel light and buoyant and open inside, where sensations can be met and processed with ease and not with a sense that they are oppressive and to be feared. Inner space and volume have a healthy push-back against the external world pressing in on us, commonly felt as overwhelm and constriction from stress if we don’t have those resources to meet it with openness.
Yoga Sutras of Patanjali 2.48: Tatah dvandva anabhighata – From the attainment of that perfected posture, there arises an unassailable, unimpeded freedom from suffering due to the pairs of opposites (such as heat and cold, good and bad, or pain and pleasure).
These are qualities that we can feel, not just conceptually but as real sensations within the biotensegrity of our bodies (page 81) that we can tune into as visceral feeling.
